VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Each year, MHAS volunteers donate their time and talent to advance our mission of protecting the legal rights of people with mental health disabilities.

PRO BONO

Our pro bono attorney partners are an important part of our success. MHAS is a member of SoCal Pro Bono Managers, and we participate in the ABA’s Pro Bono Week Celebration each year. We have a variety of opportunities for attorneys to partner with us on cases in a pro bono capacity. MHAS is also proud to be a part of California’s Campaign for Justice.

MHAS’ pro bono opportunities include the following:

  • Public Benefits Appeals

  • Fair Housing Cases

  • Ticket Resolution and Expungement

  • Periodic Community Legal Clinics

  • Litigation Opportunities

For more information, please contact Jo Bloomfield at jbloomfield@mhas-la.org.

LAW STUDENTS

Each year, MHAS provides law school students with hands-on experience in the field of public interest and disability law. MHAS offers exceptional law students a paid summer clerkship through the Jim Preis Summer Law Clerk Program.

Jim Preis served as the Executive Director of MHAS for 40 years. An extraordinary advocate for people with mental health disabilities, Jim dedicated his entire career to improving our mental health systems. He particularly loved working with students, which is why MHAS’s summer law clerk program is named in his honor.

MHAS will hire three paid law clerks for the summer of 2024. This is a short-term position that does not include employee benefits such as health insurance. Applications are accepted from first-year law students beginning in January; second- and third-year students can apply at any time. To apply, please email your cover letter, resume, and writing sample to MHAS’s Managing Attorney, Jo Bloomfield, at jbloomfield@mhas-la.org.
